Heavy monsoon rains continue to lash Kerala, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue red and orange alerts across multiple districts. On Wednesday, Kozhikode and Wayanad have been placed under a red alert due to the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall. An orange alert has been issued in nine other districts including Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha are under a yellow alert.
The rainfall is expected to intensify over the next two days. On Thursday, red alerts are declared for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kannur, and Kasaragod, while ten other districts will remain under orange alert. By Friday, six districts including Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Pathanamthitta are forecast to face very heavy rainfall with red alerts in place.
In Kannur, a landslide occurred on the Kottiyoor-Palchuram road, disrupting traffic on a major route to Wayanad. Authorities have advised using the Periya Churam route instead. The rains have caused significant damage, especially in agriculture, with losses estimated at ₹4.5 crore and over 101 hectares of crops destroyed. KSEB has reported around ₹9 crore in infrastructure damage, with 1,388 electric poles damaged.
In Alappuzha, a youth named Adarsh remains in critical condition after sustaining a spinal injury in an accident caused by strong winds. Relief efforts are ongoing, with Kozhikode housing 151 people across four camps due to flooding. While Idukki has seen slight relief in rainfall, dam alerts and school holidays remain in effect.
