Congress Firm on PV Anwar’s Inclusion: Support for UDF Must Come First

VD Satheesan rules out persuasion; Anwar to clarify position in press meet amid Nilambur by-election tension

As political discussions around the Nilambur by-election intensify, the Congress party has made its stance clear regarding PV Anwar. The party has stated that it will only consider further engagement if Anwar changes his position and formally declares his support for the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate Aryadan Shaukat. Anwar, who leads the Kerala unit of the Trinamool Congress, has expressed a desire to be fully integrated into the UDF. However, the UDF leadership, particularly the Congress, maintains that Anwar must first demonstrate his commitment by backing the UDF candidate.

Opposition leader VD Satheesan has adopted a firm stand, asserting that there is no need to pursue or attempt to persuade Anwar. According to Satheesan, any further talks can only take place after Anwar aligns himself with the UDF’s electoral strategy.

The political suspense is likely to ease today, as Anwar has scheduled a press conference at 9 a.m. to announce his official stance on the by-election. Meanwhile, the UDF is reportedly open to granting Anwar’s party an associate membership, but not full inclusion unless he declares support for their candidate. Late-night consensus talks were held in an effort to resolve the impasse, but the Congress leadership remains unwavering in its precondition.
