Moscow: During his annual news conference, Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the outcomes of Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, claiming they have significantly bolstered the country’s defense and economic resilience. Putin emphasized that Russia’s sovereignty has strengthened over the past few years, stating, “We are standing firm in terms of economy and military capability.” He also expressed regret over not initiating the operation sooner, suggesting that earlier preparation would have been beneficial.
The event, which lasted over four hours, showcased Putin’s command over a broad range of topics, including hypersonic missile technology, global diplomacy, and domestic concerns. Addressing the use of a hypersonic missile against Ukraine, Putin dismissed claims that NATO could intercept such technology, mockingly inviting Western powers to a “high-tech duel.”
Domestically, Putin acknowledged challenges such as inflation, which stands at 9.3%, but assured the public that Russia’s economy remains stable and is projected to grow by nearly 4% this year.
Regarding Syria, Putin denied that the ousting of ally Bashar Assad weakened Russia, arguing that its primary objective of targeting terrorist groups was achieved. He hinted at possible future cooperation with Syrian opposition forces while noting Israel’s growing influence in southern Syria.
On Ukraine, Putin reiterated openness to peace talks but insisted they must reflect ground realities. He criticized Ukraine’s NATO ambitions and emphasized that any compromises must align with Russia’s strategic interests.
Putin also addressed domestic concerns like high consumer prices and the healthcare workforce shortage. Over two million questions were submitted in advance, underscoring public interest in the conference. The event, a mix of spectacle and policymaking, allowed Putin to consolidate his authority and project confidence in Russia’s global standing.
