Thiruvananthapuram: The Neyyattinkara Additional Sessions Court is set to pronounce the sentencing in the Sharon Raj murder case today, following the conviction of the prime accused, Greeshma, and her uncle, Nirmalakumaran Nair. Judge A M Basheer delivered the verdict on Friday, acquitting Greeshma’s mother, Sindhu, citing insufficient evidence, a decision that has drawn criticism from Sharon’s family.
Sharon Raj, a 23-year-old radiology student from Parassala, lost his life in October 2022 after being poisoned by Greeshma at her residence in Ramavarmanchirai, Kanyakumari. The murder stemmed from Sharon’s refusal to end their relationship. Greeshma served him an Ayurvedic drink laced with pesticide, leading to severe organ failure and his tragic death on October 25, despite initial signs of recovery.
Greeshma faces multiple convictions, including murder, poisoning, abduction with intent to murder, and providing false information. Her uncle, Nirmalakumaran Nair, was convicted of tampering with evidence. Meanwhile, Sindhu’s acquittal has disheartened Sharon’s parents, who have announced plans to challenge the decision in the High Court.
The case, closely followed across Kerala and Tamil Nadu, was spearheaded by a special investigative team under the leadership of then-district police chief D Shilpa. Greeshma and her uncle have remained in custody since their arrests in late 2022. The sentencing marks a pivotal moment in the high-profile case.
