A tourist bus carrying children overturned in Erinjayam, Nedumangad, Thiruvananthapuram, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. The bus, returning from a recreational trip, flipped onto its roof on the Nedumangad-Vembayam road near a sharp bend close to the SNDP office around 10:15 PM. Approximately 50 passengers were on board at the time.
The tragic incident claimed the life of a 60-year-old woman, Dasini, whose body was taken to the Nedumangad District Hospital. Several injured passengers were rushed to nearby medical facilities with the help of locals, police, and fire force personnel. Health Minister Veena George directed the Superintendent of Medical College to ensure advanced medical care for the injured. Of the victims, 26 were admitted to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, seven to Thiruvananthapuram SAT Hospital, and 15 to Nedumangad District Hospital.
The bus driver, Arundas, initially fled the scene but was later taken into custody. Reports indicate that he sought treatment for minor injuries at a private hospital before hiding at a friend’s house. Preliminary investigations confirmed he was not under the influence of alcohol.
The bus involved, registered as KL-21-Q-9050, lost control near the accident site. A crane was deployed to lift the overturned vehicle, clearing the area for traffic. The incident has highlighted the urgent need for stricter road safety measures, especially on routes frequently used for school excursions.
