Trump Raises Genocide Concerns in South Africa, Ramaphosa Firmly Denies Claims

US President accuses South Africa of targeting white farmers; President Ramaphosa responds with facts and context on crime and land reform

Washington: During a meeting at the White House, US President Donald Trump confronted South African President Cyril Ramaphosa with controversial and unproven allegations that white South Africans—particularly Afrikaner farmers—are being systematically murdered and having their land seized. Trump cited videos shared by Afrikaner advocacy groups and news reports to support his claims. He also referred to the Witkruis Monument, a symbolic memorial site in South Africa, incorrectly suggesting it is a mass grave for murdered white farmers.

Ramaphosa, a former anti-apartheid leader and now President of South Africa, refuted the allegations, asserting that the claims of white genocide are baseless. He pointed out that Julius Malema, leader of the radical Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party featured in the video Trump played, leads a minority opposition party and operates legally under the South African constitution. While acknowledging the country’s crime challenges, Ramaphosa emphasized that violence does not disproportionately affect white farmers.

Trump’s administration has recently made moves to fast-track refugee and citizenship processes for Afrikaners, despite maintaining a strict immigration policy elsewhere. The issue was further politicized with billionaire Elon Musk also voicing concerns, criticizing South Africa’s Black Economic Empowerment laws as restrictive.

Official crime data contradicts the genocide narrative: in 2024, only 44 murders occurred on farms, with just one involving a farmer. No international body has labeled the situation a genocide. The ongoing land reform legislation, aimed at addressing apartheid-era injustices, has not yet resulted in any forced land seizures. Ramaphosa reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to democratic values and inclusive governance.
