Tottenham Clinch Europa League, Ending 17-Year Trophy Drought

Brennan Johnson’s lone goal seals historic win over Manchester United as Spurs book Champions League spot

Bilbao: Tottenham Hotspur have finally broken their 17-year trophy drought by defeating Manchester United 1-0 in a hard-fought Europa League final on Wednesday. The decisive goal came in the 42nd minute, when Brennan Johnson capitalised on a defensive lapse and confusion inside the United box. As Pape Sarr sent in a cross, Johnson and Luke Shaw clashed for the ball, which deflected past a motionless Andre Onana and into the net.

It was not a classic final by any means—both teams struggled for rhythm in a match that mirrored their disappointing Premier League seasons. United, sitting 16th, and Spurs, just one spot below in 17th, turned their focus to Europe for a chance at redemption.

Despite chances for an equaliser, including a close-range header from Rasmus Hojlund cleared off the line by Micky van de Ven and a last-gasp save from Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario to deny Shaw, United couldn’t find a breakthrough.

The victory marked Tottenham’s first European trophy since their UEFA Cup win in 1984 and gave much-needed validation to manager Ange Postecoglou. He had insisted that silverware typically arrives in his second season, and Wednesday’s triumph proved him right.

Spurs’ win secures them a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League, a stunning turnaround for a team that suffered 21 league defeats. The win also extended their unbeaten run against Manchester United to seven matches, including four victories this season alone—an unprecedented feat for the club.

Captain Son Heung-min lifted his first trophy with the team amid cheers and confetti, delivering long-awaited joy to the Spurs faithful. For Manchester United, the loss adds another layer of frustration to a season already defined by failure and leaves them likely facing a year without European football.
