WhatsApp is set to launch a significant new feature aimed at curbing misinformation on its platform, allowing users to verify the authenticity of images they send and receive. According to a report by WABetaInfo, the Meta-owned messaging app is introducing an image search capability that will enable users to quickly gather more information about specific images.
The recent WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.21.31, available on the Google Play Store, has revealed that users will soon be able to search for shared images on the internet. This new feature will prove particularly useful in identifying misleading or fake images often shared with deceptive intentions.
For instance, if a user receives an image that appears altered or taken out of context, this feature will allow them to verify its authenticity by searching for similar images or the original version online. Upon initiating a search, the image will be uploaded to Google to find relevant results.
According to the report, this functionality will enable users to validate the legitimacy of images shared in conversations, whether they stem from news articles, social media posts, or memes that may have been manipulated. The image search feature will be applicable to all types of images, irrespective of how they were shared, whether directly from a contact or through a forwarded message.
WABetaInfo highlighted that this feature would significantly aid users in tracing the source of images, identifying potential fake news, and confirming the authenticity of photos circulating on social media. While this feature is still under development, it is anticipated to roll out in a future update, enhancing the user experience by fostering a more informed and trustworthy messaging environment.
