Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is set to implement significant changes to vehicle registration with updates to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. Under the new regulations, vehicle owners will no longer be restricted to registering their vehicles at the Regional Transport Office (RTO) corresponding to their home address. Instead, they will have the freedom to register their vehicles at any RTO within the state, providing greater flexibility, especially for those who relocate frequently for work or business.
In addition to this, vehicle owners will now be able to choose their preferred registration series. This new provision is expected to make the process more convenient, particularly for those purchasing vehicles from locations outside their residential area.
Moreover, the system will introduce a statewide unified registration series, similar to the Bharat Series (BH) model, which is already in place. This unified approach means that instead of each RTO issuing its own unique series, there will be a single registration series applicable across Kerala, simplifying vehicle registration and making the process more efficient. These reforms are aimed at streamlining procedures and offering more flexibility to vehicle owners across the state.
The introduction of these changes is expected to significantly reduce the administrative burden on both vehicle owners and RTOs, while also minimizing delays in the registration process. By offering a unified registration series and the freedom to register at any transport office in the state, the Kerala Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) aims to create a more user-friendly and efficient system. This move is part of a broader effort to modernize transportation services in Kerala, aligning with national trends toward streamlined vehicle management and enhanced convenience for the public.
