The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for four districts in Kerala—Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Malappuram, and Wayanad—indicating the likelihood of moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in isolated areas. The ongoing summer showers, which have been affecting multiple parts of the state, are expected to continue today as well. The weather department attributed the rainfall to a cyclonic circulation persisting over southern Tamil Nadu and the southern Andaman Sea, along with moist winds flowing in from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.
The IMD has also cautioned that wind speeds may pick up to 30–40 kmph in affected areas, potentially intensifying the adverse weather conditions. On Monday, several regions experienced widespread rain, causing not only disruptions but also posing significant risks. In Kozhikode’s Chathamangalam, a woman tragically lost her life after being struck by lightning. In Idukki, a man from Tamil Nadu died following a landslide triggered by heavy rains. Another incident in Mundakkayam saw employment guarantee workers struck by lightning, adding to the growing number of rain-related mishaps.
Several homes were damaged across the state due to lightning and strong winds. In Idukki’s Nedumkandam and Prakashgram Para in Vellara, residences suffered structural damage, including that of a local resident named Sasidharan. Sathyaraj’s home in Kiliyur and a house in Ambalappara, Palakkad were also affected. With rain expected to persist, authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure safety.
