Keerthy Suresh turned heads as a South Indian bride, wearing an exquisite Anita Dongre Kanjeevaram saree that was crafted using the intricate Korvai technique. The saree, a blend of pure handloom silk and luxurious gold zari, features geometric checks and nature-inspired motifs, showcasing both the actress’s elegance and the rich cultural heritage of South India. This masterpiece took an impressive 405 hours to create, with the Korvai technique being key to its intricate design.
The Korvai technique is a traditional method known for creating a seamless and structured connection between a saree’s body and its border. Unlike plain silk sarees, Korvai sarees have a distinctive, heavy zari border that is skillfully interwoven into the saree’s body, making it a labor-intensive process. Two skilled weavers work simultaneously on the loom, weaving the zari border on both edges of the fabric, which is why Korvai sarees are often considered more expensive and luxurious.
This traditional technique, passed down through generations, is the hallmark of Kanjeevaram sarees. Its meticulous craftsmanship not only enhances the saree’s beauty but also represents the enduring skills of South India’s artisans. Korvai sarees, with their stunning patterns and premium quality, have always been cherished for weddings and special occasions, making them a symbol of cultural heritage and timeless elegance.
