Coconut Oil Shows Promise in Preventing and Controlling Mouth Cancer: AIIMS Study

Recent research from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has highlighted the potential benefits of coconut oil in combating mouth cancer. A 12-week study involving 62 patients, led by a team of researchers including Dr. Amit Ghosh and Dr. C. Pritam, found that virgin coconut oil can be effective in preventing and controlling the early stages of mouth cancer. The study revealed that swishing virgin coconut oil in the mouth four times daily led to faster healing of oral lesions and a significant reduction in the progression of cancer in its initial stages. This has spurred further research into developing an oral ointment based on coconut oil.

Despite concerns about coconut oil’s cholesterol content, studies have clarified that it does not contain cholesterol and includes beneficial components like vitamins, minerals, and plant sterols. Harvard University notes that while plant sterols can mimic cholesterol and potentially block its absorption, the amounts in coconut oil are too small to have a significant impact. However, it’s important to use high-quality coconut oil and apply it cautiously to maximize health benefits and avoid potential issues.
