
As the temperature drops, so does our natural urge to drink water, which may lead to an increase in kidney stone cases during winter months. Research shows that kidney stones affect 1 in 10 people in their lifetime, with many experiencing severe pain and complications. A recent study has found a seasonal surge in kidney stone diagnoses, with some areas reporting a 30% increase during colder months.
Dr. PS Vali, Senior Consultant Nephrologist at AINU, Hyderabad, emphasized that the lack of sufficient water intake in winter can cause concentrated urine, which leads to the buildup of minerals and unwanted substances, ultimately resulting in kidney stones. This issue, often overlooked during winter, presents a serious health risk as the pain of passing a kidney stone is comparable to childbirth.
Research published in the National Library of Medicine indicates that urinary calcium levels are significantly higher during the winter, increasing the likelihood of kidney stone formation. This highlights the need for different hydration strategies based on the season to prevent kidney stones.
To reduce the risk of kidney stones, health experts recommend drinking at least 2 to 3 liters of water per day, especially for those with a history of kidney stones. Additionally, increasing intake of calcium-rich foods, magnesium, and citrate can further help prevent stone formation.
