A concerning national survey conducted by Dalberg Advisors and the Sports and Society Accelerator has revealed that over 200 million Indians are classified as ‘inactive’ based on international standards. The report highlights a significant disparity in physical activity levels across the country, with urban girls being the most affected demographic. The survey underscores the urgent need to incorporate more physical activity into school curriculums and public spaces, challenging the misconception that exercise detracts from academic performance.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), adults should engage in a minimum of 150 minutes of physical activity each week, while children and adolescents should aim for at least 60 minutes daily. However, the survey found that many Indians fall far short of these recommendations. Alarmingly, about one in five parents prioritize academics over their children’s playtime, which reflects a pervasive bias favoring educational achievement over physical well-being.
Shwetha Totapally, the regional director of Dalberg Advisors, emphasized the need to dispel the myth that physical activity impedes academic success; rather, it actually supports and enhances academic performance. Furthermore, WHO statistics indicate that around 188.3 million adults in India suffer from hypertension, with lifestyle factors, including inactivity, contributing significantly to this health issue. India also ranks poorly in global obesity statistics, with obesity rates increasing steadily since 1990.
The survey’s findings show that urban areas exhibit nearly double the inactivity rates compared to rural regions, highlighting a stark urban-rural divide. Many students reported inadequate sports facilities, with 67% stating a lack of sports equipment and 21% noting the absence of playgrounds in schools. Additionally, gender discrimination remains a barrier to physical activity for girls, who often face challenges such as limited public spaces, household responsibilities, and safety concerns.
To combat this alarming trend, experts recommend several strategies to increase physical activity levels, including:
Taking the Stairs: Opt for stairs instead of elevators or escalators whenever possible.
Parking Further Away: Choose a parking spot further from your destination to incorporate extra walking.
Daily Walking: Incorporate walking into your daily routine, even at work.
Taking Breaks: Regularly step away from screens to encourage movement.
Strength Exercises: Engage in strength training to build muscle and core stability.
Exploring Different Activities: Participate in various exercises such as yard work, dancing, swimming, biking, or team sports.
Avoiding Harmful Substances: Minimize alcohol intake and refrain from smoking to improve overall health.
These actionable steps can help combat the widespread inactivity and promote healthier lifestyles across India.
