The timing of the photoshoot, which coincided with the devastation caused by Hurricane Milton in Florida, has been a point of contention, as critics accused Harris of focusing on media appearances while parts of the nation faced a natural disaster.
The cover, shot by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz, features a headline labeling Harris as “The candidate for our times.” This coincides with her growing political prominence following President Joe Biden’s decision not to run for re-election. Vogue published an extensive 8,000-word profile on Harris, highlighting her policy plans if she wins the presidency in November. In her interview, Harris emphasized her commitment to reducing costs for Americans, explaining that her focus is on implementing tangible, street-level benefits for citizens.
Despite the in-depth interview and Vogue’s support of Harris since July, the cover has drawn fierce criticism online. Several social media users, particularly from conservative circles, voiced their displeasure, accusing Harris of ignoring national priorities. One critic sarcastically tweeted, “Glad to see Kamala Harris has her priorities straight, posing for Vogue while people are still suffering from the hurricane.” Another echoed similar sentiments, mentioning ongoing recovery efforts in North Carolina and Tennessee, further criticizing the timing of Harris’ photoshoot.
The Harris-Walz campaign has yet to issue a formal response to the backlash.
