Sabarimala: As the Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season approaches, Sabarimala Temple’s virtual queue booking system has undergone changes, sparking controversy. The daily limit for virtual queue bookings, which was initially set at 80,000 slots, has now been reduced to 70,000. This unexpected reduction has raised questions, especially as the booking process opened for the upcoming pilgrimage season. Devaswom Board President P S Prashanth stated that a decision regarding the reduction of virtual queue slots would be made before the start of the pilgrimage season. Meanwhile, devotees without virtual bookings will need to carry valid identification for spot entries.
To ensure smooth pilgrimage operations, the Kerala government, along with the Devaswom Board, has been actively coordinating with various departments and agencies. A series of high-level meetings, chaired by the Chief Minister and attended by key officials from the Devaswom Ministry, police, and district administration, has focused on enhancing facilities for the pilgrims. Efforts are being made to improve infrastructure at key points like Sannidhanam, Pampa, and base camps, with strengthened coordination among agencies such as the Travancore Devaswom Board, police, health, forest, and public works departments.
Safety measures for pilgrims, especially those trekking through forest routes, have been prioritized. Road maintenance and the availability of ambulances at Nilakkal and Pampa have been ensured. Additionally, 12 emergency medical centers are being established, with the Forest Department setting up medical facilities along the Karimala route. Cardiologists will also be available for emergency care. Special provisions are being made for pilgrims arriving from other states, further reinforcing the importance of smooth and safe pilgrimage arrangements.
