Swiggy’s 2024 annual report has unveiled fascinating insights into India’s evolving culinary habits, underlining the nation’s undying passion for food. The report highlights staggering statistics, including 23 million dosas and an astounding 83 million biryanis ordered this year, solidifying these dishes’ status as culinary staples. This culinary snapshot also delves into snack preferences, regional favorites, and extraordinary dining feats, reflecting India’s vibrant food culture.
Biryani, the reigning champion for nine years, remains unmatched in popularity. With 158 biryanis ordered every minute, or nearly two every second, its appeal is undeniable. During Ramadan alone, 6 million biryanis were ordered, and one Kolkata resident celebrated the new year with biryani at 4 a.m., exemplifying its cultural significance.
Regional preferences showcased India’s diversity. Bengaluru residents led the charge in dosa orders, consuming 2.5 million Masala Dosas, while Shillong embraced noodles as its new favorite dish. Cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, and Kolkata stayed loyal to traditional flavors, with chole, aloo parathas, and kachoris dominating local orders.
Snacks also played a pivotal role, with Chicken Rolls leading at 2.48 million orders, followed by Chicken Momos and Potato Fries. Late-night cravings saw Chicken Burgers dominate between 12 and 2 a.m., closely followed by biryani.
Desserts reflected India’s sweet tooth, with 3.6 million Choco Lava Cakes and 2.27 million Chocolate Cakes ordered. Celebrations spiked dessert orders, including 193 cakes per minute on Mother’s Day and 11.4 million Milk Cakes during Diwali.
Extraordinary milestones included a Bengaluru consumer spending ₹49,900 on pasta and a Delhi user ordering 250 Onion Pizzas in one go. Delivery partners collectively traveled 1.96 billion kilometers—equivalent to over half a million journeys from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.
This report underscores that while India is a mosaic of diverse culinary preferences, the nation’s collective love for food remains a unifying force.
