As the monsoon sets in with high humidity and cool breezes, it’s common to crave fried snacks and comfort foods. But according to Ayurveda, this season—referred to as Varsha Ritu—brings specific health challenges. The digestive fire, known as Agni, weakens during this time, while Vata dosha becomes aggravated due to increased moisture and wind. This combination makes digestion sluggish and increases the risk of health issues like bloating, fatigue, infections, and joint pain.
Ayurveda suggests avoiding certain foods that are difficult to digest or that can further disturb the body’s internal balance during the rainy season. Leafy greens such as spinach (palak), fenugreek (methi), and lettuce should be avoided, as they are prone to contamination and can tax the digestive system. Raw and cold foods, like salads or refrigerated drinks, can also weaken digestion. Similarly, fermented foods, excessive dairy, seafood, and red meats are best limited, as they may cause heaviness, gas, or infections.
Instead, opt for freshly prepared, warm, and mildly spiced meals. Simple dishes like khichdi, vegetable stews, and porridges are nourishing and gentle on the stomach. Incorporating digestive spices like ginger, cumin, and turmeric can help restore balance. Herbal teas and spiced buttermilk are also ideal.
To stay healthy, drink boiled or filtered water, eat on time, and avoid heavy naps during the day. Aligning your food habits with seasonal changes can help strengthen your immune system, improve digestion, and keep seasonal ailments at bay.
