According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter was located 93 kilometers (57 miles) from Lobuche in Nepal, near the mountainous border with Tibet in China. The earthquake, which occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometers (6 miles), also generated strong tremors that were felt as far as 200 kilometers southeast, in Kathmandu.
Tremors were felt in several regions of northern India, including Bihar. Local resident Dinesh Kumar Singh described the experience, saying, “Suddenly the chair and fan started shaking; I ran outside knowing it was an earthquake, and then saw everyone rushing toward the road…” Despite the intensity of the quake, no immediate reports of widespread damage or casualties have been confirmed.
