Study Reveals Breastfeeding’s Protective Role Against Asthma and its Critical Impact on Infant Gut Microbiome Development

A recent study published in Cell highlights the significant role of breastfeeding in reducing the risk of asthma in infants and supporting the healthy development of their gut microbiome. The research, which involved data from 3,500 Canadian children, shows that breastfeeding for at least the first year plays a key role in shaping the infant’s microbiome and strengthening their immune system.

According to the findings, breastfeeding beyond three months allows for the gradual maturation of a baby’s gut, fostering a balance of healthy microbes. Breast milk contains complex sugars and nutrients that support the growth of beneficial bacteria, which protect against asthma and other immune-related conditions. On the contrary, early cessation of breastfeeding (before three months) can disrupt microbiome development, increasing the likelihood of preschool asthma.

One key discovery was the early appearance of Ruminococcus gnavus—a bacterial species linked to immune problems like asthma—in the guts of non-breastfed children. This premature colonization highlights the importance of breast milk in regulating the microbial environment. Researchers noted that breastfeeding acts like a “pacemaker,” ensuring that microbes colonize the gut and nasal cavity in the right sequence.

Liat Shenhav, co-senior investigator and computational biologist at NYU, emphasized that their findings demonstrate breastfeeding’s crucial role in shaping not just microbial diversity but also respiratory health. The team hopes their study will influence national breastfeeding guidelines and lead to asthma prevention strategies for children unable to breastfeed.

With further research, these insights could pave the way for new interventions aimed at improving infant health, especially in cases where breastfeeding is not possible.
