Living in a compact studio or small apartment offers a versatile environment for daily activities, but creating a peaceful sleep space can be challenging when everything from electronics to cooking equipment is in one room. Ensuring quality sleep is crucial for overall well-being, and optimizing your small space for rest can make a big difference.
“The primary rule, maybe the only rule of small space design, is people have to be honest about how they really live,” says Olivia Hosken, deputy managing editor at House Beautiful. “When there’s limited square footage, there’s less allowance for things that don’t function optimally.”
Andrea Morris from Lancaster Place Interiors suggests investing in a high-quality bed or sleep sofa rather than bulky furniture that may not be used often. Murphy beds, which fold into the wall during the day and provide a comfortable sleep surface at night, are a favorite of Morris for their space-saving efficiency. Some Murphy bed designs even include a sofa.
To create a distinct sleep area within your studio, consider using freestanding screens, room dividers, or hanging walls to define the space. Jeff Kahn, co-founder of the sleep-research company Rise Science, advises avoiding work or stressful activities in bed. This practice helps maintain ‘stimulus control,’ allowing your brain to associate the bed with sleep rather than wakefulness and stress.
Maintaining a dedicated sleep zone and using it exclusively for rest is crucial. Psychologist Lisa Strauss recommends designating specific areas of the bed for activities like reading and sleeping to reinforce this separation. Creating a calming atmosphere is also essential for good sleep. Mia Ingui, editor at Spruce, suggests using a diffuser with relaxing scents like lavender to enhance relaxation.
Minimize exposure to artificial light from screens at night, as it can interfere with your sleep cycle. Blackout curtains and noise machines can help block out disturbances from appliances or street noise. Opting for breathable bedding materials can regulate temperature and enhance comfort in your small space.
With thoughtful design and careful planning, even the smallest living spaces can become tranquil, sleep-friendly sanctuaries.
