Understanding the Link Between Fatty Liver and Heart Attack: Insights from a Doctor

Actor Mohsin Khan's Experience Sheds Light on the Connection Between Fatty Liver Disease and Cardiovascular Health

Mohsin Khan, known for his role in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, recently revealed that he experienced a mild heart attack last year, which he attributes to fatty liver disease. The 32-year-old actor shared in an interview with Pinkvilla that the condition had become severe, leading to his hospitalization and treatment across multiple hospitals. Fortunately, he is now in better health, with the situation under control.

Khan’s case highlights an important, often overlooked connection between fatty liver disease and heart health. While liver issues are frequently associated with excessive alcohol consumption, fatty liver can develop in individuals with little to no alcohol intake, often due to lifestyle-related factors. Fatty liver, which involves the buildup of fat in the liver cells, is more than just a liver problem; it can be an early warning sign of serious cardiovascular issues, indicating the systemic impact of the condition on the body, particularly the heart.

Dr. Hitendra Garg, a Consultant Gastroenterologist, Hepatologist, and Therapeutic Endoscopist at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, explains that the relationship between fatty liver and heart disease is complex. Fat accumulation in the liver can lead to insulin resistance, increased inflammation, and changes in lipid metabolism, all of which contribute to a higher risk of atherosclerosis, hypertension, and other cardiovascular problems. He emphasizes that lifestyle habits, such as poor diet, lack of physical activity, and inadequate sleep, play a significant role in the development of fatty liver. For example, sleep deprivation can disrupt metabolic processes, leading to increased fat storage in the liver.

Dr. Garg advises that by making lifestyle changes—improving sleep quality, eating a balanced diet, and staying physically active—individuals can prevent or manage fatty liver disease. These actions not only protect the liver but also significantly reduce the risk of heart-related complications, underscoring the importance of a holistic approach to health.
