Walnuts May Help Lower Risk of Colon Cancer, Study Suggests

New research highlights the cancer-fighting properties of walnuts, thanks to their powerful anti-inflammatory compounds

Colon cancer ranks as the fourth most prevalent form of cancer among both men and women. However, new findings from the UConn School of Medicine suggest that adding walnuts to your daily diet could play a significant role in reducing the risk of developing this condition. The key to this benefit lies in polyphenols found in walnuts, specifically a group called ellagitannins. Once digested in the intestines, these compounds transform into urolithins, which are known for their strong anti-inflammatory and disease-fighting properties.

In the study, 39 individuals aged between 40 and 65 who were considered to be at higher risk of colon cancer were monitored over a three-week period. Each participant followed a controlled diet that included walnuts. At the end of the trial, lab tests and colonoscopies were conducted. The researchers found that participants with higher levels of urolithin A also showed increased levels of the peptide YY protein, which is known to inhibit the development of colorectal cancer.

Besides their cancer-fighting potential, walnuts are loaded with essential nutrients including fiber, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins B6 and E, folate, magnesium, and antioxidants. These elements make walnuts a powerful superfood that supports not just gut health, but also benefits the brain, heart, and bones.
