In a decisive move to combat the rising tide of spam calls and messages, telecom service providers in India have implemented strict measures that include blacklisting over 50 entities and disconnecting more than 2.75 lakh mobile numbers and other telecom resources. This action follows recent directives issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), which mandated immediate cessation of promotional voice calls from unregistered senders and telemarketers.
The TRAI’s intervention comes in response to growing consumer frustration over the proliferation of unsolicited communications. These measures are designed to tackle the misuse of telecom resources and significantly reduce the volume of spam calls. By disconnecting the telecom resources associated with these unregistered entities, TRAI aims to provide substantial relief to mobile users, who have increasingly reported disruptions caused by unwanted promotional calls.
According to TRAI, the crackdown involves severe penalties for violators, including disconnection of all telecom resources for up to two years and blacklisting. This stringent approach is intended to deter unregistered telemarketers from engaging in spam activities. In the first half of 2024 alone, TRAI recorded more than 7.9 lakh complaints against such telemarketers, highlighting the urgent need for effective regulatory action.
TRAI has urged all telecom stakeholders to fully comply with these new regulations to foster a cleaner and more efficient telecom ecosystem. The regulatory authority’s latest measures reflect its commitment to protecting consumers from the annoyance and potential risks associated with spam calls, aiming to restore a sense of order and trust within the telecom industry.
