Kerala is witnessing a concerning spike in jaundice cases, primarily due to an outbreak of Hepatitis A, prompting serious attention from health authorities. In April alone, 18 individuals were diagnosed with jaundice, with several cases concentrated in Kumaramangalam panchayat, Idukki district. Dr. Jobin G Joseph, the district surveillance officer, stated that the outbreak is linked to contaminated drinking water. As a response, stringent preventive measures have been initiated in the affected areas to curb further spread.
The Health Department has advised residents to take precautionary steps such as consuming only boiled and cooled water for drinking and cooking. Public caution is particularly urged when eating or drinking from roadside vendors or unhygienic sources. Maintaining personal hygiene is essential—this includes washing hands regularly, consuming freshly prepared food, and keeping living environments clean.
Typical symptoms of Hepatitis A include fever, persistent fatigue, headaches, vomiting, yellowing of the eyes and skin, and dark-colored urine. Early detection and medical intervention are crucial. The virus is commonly spread through contaminated food or water and can be passed on through direct contact with infected individuals. Caregivers must wash hands thoroughly with soap and ensure that infected persons use separate utensils and water containers to prevent transmission. Taking these preventive measures seriously can help control the outbreak and safeguard community health.
