Moderation in Workouts: Key to Avoiding Injuries and Enhancing Well-being

While regular exercise is crucial for maintaining both physical and mental health, moderation plays a pivotal role in maximizing its benefits and preventing potential downsides. Experts emphasize that a balanced approach to exercise can help avoid injuries, reduce burnout, and promote long-term consistency.

Exercise is well-documented for its ability to prevent major health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and certain cancers. It also improves mental health by alleviating stress, anxiety, and depression. However, Dr. Samanjoy Mukherjee, Senior Interventional Cardiologist at Manipal Hospital, highlights that moderation is essential for preventing injuries and ensuring sustainable fitness habits. “Balancing intensity with adequate rest allows your body to recover and adapt, which enhances overall fitness and well-being. It also helps maintain motivation and reduces the risk of overtraining and related health issues,” Dr. Mukherjee noted.

Recent incidents involving high-profile individuals, including stand-up comedian Raju Srivastav and actors Siddharth Shukla and Puneeth Rajkumar, who suffered heart attacks during or after intense workouts, underscore the risks associated with excessive exercise. Dr. Mukherjee explains that many exercise-related emergencies stem from high-intensity training and may involve arrhythmias or myocardial infarction. The maximum permissible heart rate during peak exercise is calculated as 220 minus your age. Exceeding this limit, particularly without proper medical screening, can pose significant risks.

Dr. V Mohan, chairman of Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, adds that moderation helps prevent overtraining, which can lead to elevated stress hormones and increased risk of heart problems. Adequate rest between workouts is crucial to allow the heart to repair and strengthen, ensuring continuous improvement and reducing injury risk. Dr. Mohan advises paying attention to signs of overexertion, such as excessive fatigue, breathlessness, or feeling unwell. “Each individual has a unique limit, so avoid comparing your workout volume with others. Regular exercise combined with appropriate recovery is key to achieving optimal health without overstraining your body,” he stated.

In summary, while exercise is beneficial, moderation ensures that you can enjoy its rewards while minimizing risks and maintaining a balanced, effective fitness regimen.
