New Delhi: The increasing involvement of former Amethi MP Smriti Irani in the BJP’s activities in Delhi has generated significant speculation within the party’s local unit. With assembly elections approaching in 2025, Irani’s growing role has fueled talk about her potential candidacy against Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Born and raised in Delhi, Irani has been an active participant in BJP’s membership drive in the city, which began on September 2. She has taken charge of overseeing the campaign in seven out of the 14 district units.
Party insiders have also suggested that Irani’s recent purchase of a house in South Delhi points to her deepening connection with the city’s political landscape. As the BJP gears up for the upcoming elections, many within the party are pushing for a strong face to lead the charge against AAP, with Irani’s name emerging as a contender, alongside other prominent leaders like Manoj Tiwari and Bansuri Swaraj.
In previous elections, the BJP has seen mixed results in Delhi. The upcoming elections could witness a fierce competition, especially with the prospect of Kejriwal’s return to active politics if granted bail in the excise policy case. Irani’s growing involvement may provide a fresh strategy for the BJP to challenge AAP’s dominance.
