Rising Cases of Sudden Cardiac Arrests Among Youngsters: Insights from Experts

Lifestyle Choices, Genetic Factors, and Preventive Measures Highlighted by Cardiologists

The rise in sudden cardiac arrests among young individuals has become a growing concern in recent years. Cases of heart attacks occurring during gym sessions or classroom activities have alarmed both the public and healthcare professionals. During the ‘Heart Health in Youngsters’ session organized by Malayala Manorama’s cardiac health initiative, Hridayapoorvam, leading cardiologists shed light on this pressing issue. The panel included Dr. Ajith Mullassery of Madras Medical Mission Hospital, adult cardiology director Dr. VM Kurien, and pediatric cardiology expert Dr. Vijith Koshy Cherian.

The Importance of Mindful Eating

Dr. VM Kurien emphasized the role of mindful eating in heart health. He clarified that cholesterol, an essential body component, becomes problematic only when it exceeds healthy limits. Instead of entirely eliminating favorite foods, he recommends portion control and balanced diets. Adopting these habits early can prevent lifestyle-related illnesses.

Health Checks Before Fitness Routines

Indians, being genetically predisposed to heart diseases, should undergo medical evaluations before beginning intense fitness routines. Regular heart checkups, especially for individuals above 30, are crucial. Dr. Vijith Koshy suggested incorporating light physical activities like walking with friends to maintain heart health.

Sleep and Work-Life Balance

Sleep deprivation has a detrimental impact on heart health. Even four hours of quality sleep and short daily naps can significantly reduce anxiety and regulate blood sugar levels. Dr. Ajith Mullassery advised maintaining a gap of two hours between dinner and bedtime while incorporating regular breaks during prolonged work hours.

Exercise and Alcohol Consumption

Moderate exercise of 30–40 minutes daily is sufficient to maintain a healthy heart. Dr. Kurien warned against the belief that alcohol benefits the heart, emphasizing the dangers of overconsumption. Obesity and rapid weight gain also contribute to declining heart health, further underscoring the need for a balanced lifestyle.

These insights highlight the critical need for awareness, preventive measures, and timely interventions to curb the growing incidence of cardiac arrests among young people.
