Six more Indian nationals evacuated from conflict-stricken Syria arrived in New Delhi on Saturday, expressing their gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian embassy for their successful evacuation. These individuals shared harrowing accounts of their time in Syria, highlighting the critical role the embassy played in ensuring their safety and return to India. Sunil Dutt, one of the returnees, recalled how the Indian embassy had contacted them last Thursday, alerting them to the worsening situation in Syria. With the situation in Damascus rapidly deteriorating, including rebels taking over the city and widespread looting, the embassy continued to stay in close contact, advising them on safety measures and helping them stay calm.
Ratan Lal, another evacuee, mentioned his five-year stay in Syria, emphasizing the embassy’s support, which included food and shelter. Chetan Lal, who also made the journey back, recounted how the embassy arranged safe housing both in Damascus and in Lebanon before facilitating their return to India. These stories of prompt assistance and coordination under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi highlighted the efficiency of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in executing the evacuation process. As the situation in Syria remains tense, with rebels overtaking Damascus, the MEA continues to monitor the safety of Indian nationals in the region.
