In a high-scoring IPL match on Friday, the Gujarat Titans delivered a commanding performance to secure a 38-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. With this result, Gujarat climbed to the second position on the points table, while Hyderabad’s chances of making it to the playoffs now appear slim.
Batting first after being invited, Gujarat set a mammoth target of 224/6, thanks to stellar batting displays by Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler. Gill played a captain’s knock, scoring a brisk 76 off just 38 balls, while Buttler contributed a powerful 64 off 37 deliveries. Earlier, Gill and Sai Sudharsan had provided a strong start, putting together an 87-run partnership. Sudharsan made an impactful 48 off 23 balls before getting out in the 7th over.
Even after Gill was run out in the 13th over, Gujarat maintained momentum. Despite a slight dip in the run rate, Buttler reignited the pace with big shots before falling in the 19th over. Late contributions from Washington Sundar, Rahul Tewatia, and Shahrukh Khan helped Gujarat post an imposing total. Jaydev Unadkat picked up three wickets in the final over, applying pressure on Hyderabad’s chase.
In response, Abhishek Sharma tried to keep Hyderabad in the game with a valiant 74 off 41 balls, but the rest of the batting lineup couldn’t offer consistent support. Travis Head began brightly but was dismissed for 20 by a brilliant Rashid Khan catch. The middle order faltered, and despite brief efforts by Pat Cummins (19 not out) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (21), Hyderabad ended at 186/6, well short of the target.
Gujarat captain Gill praised the team’s collective effort, saying everyone contributed to the win. Hyderabad skipper Cummins acknowledged the gap in execution and said the team needed to cling to hope for the remaining matches.
