Proper nutrition plays a vital role in maintaining and strengthening bone structures, and while calcium and vitamin D often take the spotlight, protein is equally important for bone health. Protein is not just crucial for muscle development but also serves a fundamental role in supporting our skeletal system, as explained by Tanisha Bawa, Certified Nutrition Coach and founder of TAN|365.
Protein forms the foundation of bone structure by providing essential amino acids that aid in the production of collagen, a key component of bones. Collagen gives bones their flexibility and resilience, helping them endure stress and pressure. Without adequate protein intake, the collagen framework weakens, leading to a higher risk of conditions like osteoporosis and fractures.
Research indicates that individuals who consume sufficient amounts of protein tend to have stronger bone density, which becomes increasingly important as we age. Studies have shown that higher protein intake can help slow the natural decline in bone density, reducing the risk of fractures in older adults.
There are many good sources of protein for maintaining healthy bones, including both animal and plant-based options. Lean meats, fish, eggs, and dairy are rich in complete proteins, while vegetarians can rely on whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds to meet their protein needs.
However, balance is key. Overconsumption of protein, especially from animal sources, can lead to increased calcium excretion, potentially harming bone health. Therefore, it’s recommended to consume 0.8 to 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily to support bone strength while maintaining overall health.
