A violent attack on Chad’s presidential complex in N’Djamena on Wednesday left 19 people dead, including 18 attackers and one security personnel. The assault, which occurred around 7:45 PM, saw an armed commando unit storm the complex, leading to intense gunfire and the deployment of tanks across the city. Roads to the presidency were blocked, and civilians fled the scene in panic.
Government spokesperson and Foreign Minister Abderaman Koulamallah confirmed the casualty count, stating that six attackers and three security personnel were injured, with one of the security team in serious condition. Koulamallah declared the situation under control and dismissed earlier speculation linking the attackers to Boko Haram, describing them instead as “drunken, drugged individuals.”
The incident highlights Chad’s ongoing security challenges, particularly in the wake of political tensions following recent elections. These elections, criticized for low voter turnout and allegations of fraud, saw calls for boycotts by opposition groups. President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, who assumed power through military means, has faced accusations of consolidating authority amidst growing internal unrest.
This attack also comes against the backdrop of shifting diplomatic and military alliances. Chad recently terminated its defense agreements with France, joining other Sahel nations in reducing French influence in the region. President Deby has since sought new strategic partnerships with countries like Russia and Hungary to address security and political concerns.
