Architect of India’s Economic Liberalization and First Sikh Prime Minister Passes Away

New Delhi: India bids farewell to one of its most distinguished statesmen, Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away at the age of 92 on Thursday at AIIMS Delhi. The former Prime Minister and renowned economist had been admitted to the hospital after experiencing respiratory issues. The news of his demise was first shared by Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi’s husband, Robert Vadra, on social media platform X, where he expressed heartfelt condolences and praised Singh for his contributions to the nation’s economic progress.

Dr. Manmohan Singh, India’s only Sikh Prime Minister, played a pivotal role in reshaping the country’s economic landscape through the landmark liberalization policies introduced during his tenure as Finance Minister in PV Narasimha Rao’s government. These reforms steered India towards a path of globalization and economic resilience. Singh also represented Assam in the Rajya Sabha for five consecutive terms before being elected from Rajasthan in 2019.

Born in Gah, now in Pakistan, Dr. Singh’s family migrated to India during the partition. He pursued his education at Panjab University and later earned a degree in economics from Cambridge. His tenure as Prime Minister, beginning in 2004 under the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, lasted a decade and witnessed significant economic and social transformations.

Dr. Singh’s legacy as a thoughtful leader, skilled economist, and humble statesman will forever be etched in the history of India. His contributions to economic reform and governance continue to inspire the nation.
