The world of music and tabla lost one of its legends, Zakir Hussain, at the age of 73 due to complications arising from a disease known as Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). This progressive lung disease causes the lung tissues to become damaged and scarred, making it increasingly difficult for the respiratory system to function properly. One of the most challenging aspects of IPF is that its exact cause is often unknown, which makes diagnosing it difficult. The condition can worsen gradually over time, even in patients who initially show signs of stability.
IPF typically affects middle-aged and older adults, although rare cases have been reported in children and infants. Unfortunately, once the lung tissue is damaged, it cannot be repaired. While there is no cure, medications can help slow the progression of the disease, and in some severe cases, a lung transplant may be considered as a treatment option.
According to the Mayo Clinic, common symptoms of IPF include extreme fatigue, unexplained weight loss, joint and muscle pain, shortness of breath, and finger or toe clubbing (a condition where the tips of the fingers or toes widen and round). Sudden worsening of these symptoms can also occur. Despite the grim prognosis, with medical management, some people may experience a prolonged stable period before their condition deteriorates.
