Vice President Kamala Harris addressed former President Donald Trump’s recent comments about her racial identity, calling them “the same old show” of divisiveness and disrespect. Speaking to members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. in Houston, Harris criticized Trump’s remarks made at the National Association of Black Journalists meeting, where he questioned whether Harris identified as Indian or Black.
Trump had commented, “I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black and now she wants to be known as Black. So, I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?” Harris responded by emphasizing the need for unity and respect, stating that the American people deserve a leader who tells the truth and avoids hostility.
Harris, who is of Jamaican and Indian heritage, highlighted her involvement with historically Black institutions, including her time at Howard University and her membership in the Congressional Black Caucus. She urged the audience to mobilize for voter registration and turnout, underscoring the power of organized efforts in shaping political outcomes.
Her comments resonated with attendees like June Penny from Georgia, who compared Trump’s attempt to discredit Harris to similar tactics used against former President Barack Obama. Penny noted that Trump’s views do not align with the reality of racial identity in America.
Harris’ speech also acknowledged the significant role of Black Greek life organizations, which emphasize public service and have extensive networks in politics, business, and media. Many members of Congress and Biden’s close advisers are affiliated with these organizations, reinforcing Harris’ call for political engagement and voter mobilization.
