The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a thunderstorm alert for several districts across Kerala, warning residents to brace for adverse weather conditions today. According to the latest forecast, isolated parts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Malappuram may experience strong winds and rainfall within the next few hours. Wind speeds could reach up to 40 kmph, accompanied by rainfall ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm over a 24-hour period—classified as heavy rain by IMD standards.
In addition to the thunderstorm warning, the IMD has also raised concerns over possible sea erosion due to deteriorating coastal conditions. Coastal communities and fishermen have been urged to exercise caution and follow safety protocols. Authorities have advised all small fishing vessels and boats to remain docked in harbours and maintain sufficient distance between them to prevent accidents. People living near the shoreline, as well as beachgoers, are strongly discouraged from engaging in any sea-related activities until the weather stabilises.
Although no official yellow alerts had been issued earlier in the morning, the IMD anticipates rainfall across all districts as the day progresses. Officials are continuously monitoring the situation and updating advisories based on the evolving weather pattern.
