The recognition of ASHA workers’ contributions has brought a sense of relief to the healthcare sector in Kerala. Union Minister J P Nadda, while addressing the Rajya Sabha, stated that the National Health Mission (NHM) had recommended increasing financial benefits for ASHA workers. Additionally, he confirmed that arrears had already been paid to Kerala as part of the allocated funds for these workers. However, he pointed out that Kerala had yet to submit documentation detailing how the funds were utilized. His response came after a query raised by CPI MP P Santosh Kumar.
Nadda highlighted that during a recent NHM meeting, the necessity of enhancing financial aid for ASHA workers was discussed, given their significant contributions to public health. The minister assured that once the necessary approvals were obtained, further action would be taken. He also reaffirmed that Kerala had received its full share of funds, dismissing any claims of outstanding payments.
Contradicting Nadda’s statement, CPI’s Santosh Kumar alleged that the central government still owed Kerala Rs 600 crore. He accused Nadda of misleading the Rajya Sabha and announced plans to issue a notice citing a violation of rights.
Interestingly, there was no official confirmation regarding an incentive hike in responses given by Health Minister Pratap Rao Yadav and Minister of State for Health Savitri Thakur to queries raised by MPs Adv. Harris Beeran and Hibi Eden in Parliament. This lack of clarity has raised concerns among ASHA workers about when and if they will see an actual increase in their financial benefits.
