India’s star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah’s participation in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy hinges on a crucial fitness assessment, with a final decision expected today (Tuesday). This marks the deadline for squad submissions to the ICC, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to make a formal announcement based on the medical team’s report.
Bumrah, who was instrumental in India’s 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign, has been sidelined since January due to a back injury sustained in the final Test of the series. Although he was included in both India’s squad for the third ODI against England and the provisional Champions Trophy squad, his match fitness remains a concern. He recently underwent a back scan at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, and the results will determine his availability for the tournament.
Should Bumrah fail to recover in time, young pacer Harshit Rana is likely to be named as his replacement. However, the Indian team management is willing to wait until the last moment, giving their ace bowler every possible chance to regain fitness. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has emphasized Bumrah’s importance, stating, “If Bumrah isn’t fit, India’s chances of winning the Champions Trophy could drop by 30-35 percent. His ability to deliver in the death overs is crucial for the team’s success.”
In a race against time, Bumrah recently completed a five-week off-loading phase, during which he was advised complete rest, avoiding even gym workouts to aid his recovery. He has since resumed his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, where a dedicated team is working round the clock to get him match-fit. While the BCCI has remained tight-lipped about the specifics of his rehabilitation, sources suggest that a core team is closely monitoring his progress.
Key personnel overseeing Bumrah’s recovery include Strength & Conditioning (S&C) coach Rajnikanth Sivagnanam, physio Thulasi Ram Yuvraj, and Head of Sports Science Dr. Nitin Patel, with Dr. Patel personally supervising the entire process. National team S&C coach Soham Desai and physio Kamlesh Jain are also being regularly updated on his progress. If Bumrah is cleared to resume bowling, renowned bowling coach Troy Cooley is expected to assess his performance before the final call is made.
A comprehensive fitness report will be submitted to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, with head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma also being kept in the loop. While the BCCI does have the option of naming Harshit Rana as a replacement, the team remains hopeful that Bumrah will recover in time to lead India’s bowling attack in the prestigious ICC event.
