Today marks a special celebration for children across India – Children’s Day, which also commemorates the 135th birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, fondly known as “Chachaji.” As India’s first Prime Minister, Nehru’s vision and dedication to the welfare of children have been celebrated since. Nehru saw children as “buds in a garden” who needed nurturing, love, and care to bloom into the future citizens and leaders of tomorrow. His views were clear: a prosperous society could only emerge from well-educated, healthy, and happy children.
Known for his affectionate connection with children, Nehru championed their rights and wellbeing, believing that a nation’s strength lay in the physical and mental development of its youngest citizens. He was devoted to creating an inclusive society, one where children of all backgrounds could form friendships rooted in mutual respect, free from the barriers of caste or creed. Under his leadership, India made significant strides toward providing free and compulsory education for all children. Many prestigious institutions, including the IITs, AIIMS, and IIMs, were established during his tenure, representing his commitment to fostering knowledge and scientific advancement.
However, challenges still loom over India’s children today. Broken family structures, economic hardships, and rising social issues like child labor and substance abuse put children at risk. UNICEF reports that over 10 million children in India are engaged in child labor. This Children’s Day, let’s honor Nehru’s legacy by pledging to safeguard the rights, health, and education of every child, building a future that would make Chachaji proud.
