Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is witnessing a noticeable rise in temperatures as the autumn equinox sets in, with districts like Kottayam, Alappuzha, Palakkad, and Kozhikode experiencing a significant heat surge. On the eve of the equinox, temperatures in Kottayam and Alappuzha shot up by four degrees Celsius, while Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur observed slightly milder increases of 1.5 and 1.6 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The autumn equinox, also known as the September equinox, marks the time when the sun crosses the equator, causing equal lengths of day and night across the globe. During this period, the sun’s rays fall directly on the earth’s surface in many regions, including Kerala, leading to higher temperatures. The absence of rain clouds has further intensified the heat, contributing to a mini heatwave in certain parts of the state.
Despite the temperature rise, relief is on the way, as a new cyclonic circulation is expected to form over the Bay of Bengal around the 25th of this month. This development is predicted to bring widespread rainfall across Kerala for the next three days, providing much-needed respite from the heat. Residents can expect cooler weather and potential relief from the rising temperatures once the rains begin.
