Kotancherry: Kanthari chilli, also known as bird’s eye chilli, has seen a significant surge in price, crossing Rs 600 per kilogram due to its increasing demand and reduced availability. This chilli variety, known for its intense spiciness, has become highly sought after, particularly by NRI Malayalis. In fact, just two months ago, the price of green Kanthari chilli had surpassed Rs 1,000 per kilogram, showcasing the drastic price fluctuations in the market.
The rising demand for Kanthari chilli is largely driven by the popularity of salted and dried varieties, which are often bought in bulk by NRIs to take back to their countries of residence. These dried chillies are usually sold in convenient packs, attracting consumers who prefer natural, chemical-free products with longer shelf lives.
Between the two popular varieties, green Kanthari is generally priced higher than white Kanthari, as it is lighter and spicier, while the white variety is larger and heavier. The monsoon season often impacts the production of Kanthari chillies, further contributing to the rising prices during these months.
As prices continue to rise, many farmers are taking advantage of this opportunity by turning to Kanthari cultivation. The plant is easy to grow, requires minimal maintenance, and is relatively resistant to pests, making it an attractive choice for those looking to generate income through agriculture.
