Apple to Debut Custom Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Chip in HomePod Mini and Apple TV by 2025

Proxima Chip to Drive Apple's Shift Toward Silicon Independence

Apple is set to introduce its first custom Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip, internally codenamed “Proxima,” in its HomePod mini and Apple TV devices launching in 2025. This move is part of Apple’s broader strategy to reduce reliance on third-party suppliers and achieve greater silicon independence. Manufactured by TSMC, the Proxima chip will support Wi-Fi 6E, delivering improved bandwidth and faster data speeds for a more seamless user experience.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the Proxima chip represents a significant milestone for Apple, providing tighter integration and enhanced efficiency for its home devices. While the initial version may not entirely match the performance of Broadcom’s current offerings, it sets the stage for further advancements. Beyond home devices, Apple plans to expand the use of this chip to iPhones by late 2025 and to iPads and Macs by 2026.

This development aligns with Apple’s other in-house projects, including the “Sinope” custom cellular modem expected in the 2025 iPhone SE. These innovations reflect Apple’s ambition to dominate wireless technologies across its ecosystem. By creating energy-efficient and tightly integrated solutions, Apple aims to outpace competitors like Qualcomm by 2027, potentially transforming its product lineup and user experience.

Apple’s focus on developing in-house technologies like the Proxima chip and Sinope modem underscores its commitment to innovation and self-reliance. These advancements not only promise superior performance and efficiency but also enable Apple to control the design and functionality of its devices more comprehensively. As Apple transitions to these custom solutions, users can expect a more interconnected and cohesive ecosystem, with optimized hardware and software working seamlessly together. This shift is poised to solidify Apple’s position as a leader in technological innovation, offering cutting-edge features that set its products apart in an increasingly competitive market.
