Mother to Face Murder Charges in Tragic Death of 3-Year-Old Kalyani Thrown into River

Police Prepare to Arrest Woman Accused of Throwing Her Daughter from Moozhikulam Bridge in Kochi

Kochi: A horrifying incident has shaken Kerala as police prepare to charge a young woman with the murder of her three-year-old daughter, Kalyani, who was tragically thrown into a river from the Moozhikulam bridge. The child’s lifeless body was discovered early Tuesday morning after an intense search operation that lasted over three and a half hours. Authorities are expected to officially record the mother’s arrest tomorrow and may take her to the crime scene for further evidence collection.

The case has sparked widespread outrage, with police currently interrogating the mother to determine the motive behind the heinous act. According to initial reports, the woman falsely claimed her daughter had gone missing from a bus in Aluva after being picked up from the Anganwadi in Mattakuzhi, under Thiruvaniyur panchayat. However, CCTV footage later revealed the mother traveling with Kalyani to the Moozhikulam bridge.

Local witnesses, including an auto driver, stated that the woman returned alone, prompting suspicion. Subsequently, police, fire personnel, and local residents began a rigorous search operation in the river despite heavy rain and low visibility. A scuba diving team eventually located Kalyani’s body trapped under a log beneath the bridge.

Postmortem procedures are underway at Angamaly Taluk Hospital. The father’s family alleges the mother had previously attempted to harm the child, reportedly due to ongoing domestic issues. The woman has also made serious allegations of abuse within her husband’s household, adding further complexity to the investigation.
