Mata Amritanandamayi, affectionately known as Amma, is celebrating her 71st birthday, traditionally known as Amritavarsham, on Friday. Unlike previous years, where grand festivities marked the occasion, this year’s celebrations have been significantly toned down in solidarity with those affected by the recent landslides in Wayanad. In accordance with Amma’s wishes, the celebrations will remain simple, showing respect for the ongoing difficulties faced by the people of Wayanad.
In lieu of elaborate festivities, Amma has announced a Rs 15 crore project dedicated to providing technical and rehabilitation support to Wayanad, demonstrating her commitment to humanitarian efforts. The birthday events, held at Amritapuri’s prayer hall, will begin with Ganapati Homam, followed by the chanting of the Lalita Sahasranama. After a special satsang by Swami Amritaswarupananda Puri, a Guru Pada Puja will be conducted. Amma’s birthday message will also highlight upcoming charitable initiatives.
Notably, this year’s Amritakeerti Award ceremony will be part of the day’s program, along with a mass wedding where 101 couples will be blessed by Amma. As part of the spiritual proceedings, a global peace prayer, meditation session, and devotional singing will be conducted. The mass wedding will be attended by saints from the ashram, and the sacred Paduka Puja (worship of Amma’s sandals) will be performed.
Though the celebrations are restrained this year, devotees have already flocked to Amritapuri for Amma’s blessings. The ashram premises are under tight police security, and the birthday programs will be broadcast live to ashrams and devotees worldwide. This subdued celebration stands as a reflection of Amma’s compassion for those in need, while maintaining the spiritual essence of the day.
