With three races remaining, the Red Bull driver could potentially secure his fourth consecutive title at the Las Vegas Grand Prix later this month.
Verstappen’s drive at the Interlagos circuit was a display of resilience and skill, overcoming multiple setbacks, including a grid penalty for an engine change and the challenging wet weather. He expertly navigated the tricky conditions, finding grip on the wet track where others faltered, and ultimately finishing 20 seconds ahead of the pack. His ability to clock the fastest lap 17 times also earned him an extra point.
Throughout the race, Verstappen capitalized on opportunities, particularly during a virtual safety car triggered by Nico Hulkenberg’s spin on lap 27. While some drivers pitted, Verstappen and Alpine’s Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly opted to stay out, a decision that proved crucial. Another turning point came five laps later when a red flag halted the race following Franco Colapinto’s crash, allowing Verstappen, Ocon, and Gasly to pit without losing positions.
After the race, Verstappen expressed that winning in Brazil was significant in his quest for the title, humorously describing the challenging conditions as “like driving a boat.” Meanwhile, Norris, who began in pole position, struggled to maintain his lead in the rain and ultimately finished sixth, expressing disappointment but acknowledging Verstappen’s exceptional race.
In a show of sportsmanship, Lewis Hamilton praised Verstappen’s skillful drive, while also taking a moment to honor the late Ayrton Senna by driving Senna’s historic McLaren MP4/5B before the race. With races remaining in Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi, Verstappen now enjoys a 62-point lead over Norris and remains poised for his fourth title in what has been a defining season.
