The family of Abdul Rahim, a native of Kodampuzha in Kozhikode, is anxiously awaiting the final verdict from a Saudi court that could secure his release after 18 years in prison. Rahim, who was sentenced to death in 2006 for the accidental death of his sponsor’s disabled son, Anas al-Shahri, had his death sentence revoked in June 2024 after his family paid Rs 34 crore as blood money.
The Riyadh Criminal Court, which initially demanded further review of the case, is expected to deliver its final decision soon. Despite the victim’s family pardoning Rahim, the prosecution’s argument that the death was intentional has delayed the proceedings. If the court issues a release order, it must still be approved by the Supreme Court, the Governorate, and the Ministry of Interior.
Rahim’s brother, Nasir, expressed hope that the next court sitting will bring a favorable verdict. The Riyadh Rahim Legal Aid Committee has urged Saudi authorities to expedite the release process. While the legal formalities may take time, it is certain that Rahim will not face further punishment.
The family, along with supporters in Kerala, remains hopeful that Rahim will soon return home, ending their long and arduous struggle for justice.
