Kerala Budget 2025-26: Major Boost for Agriculture, Fisheries, and Rural Industries

Government Allocates Funds for Paddy, Dairy, Coastal Protection, and Small-Scale Industries

The Kerala Budget 2025-26, presented by Finance Minister K N Balagopal, has introduced a series of initiatives to strengthen the agricultural sector and provide relief to fishermen and rural industries. With a strong focus on infrastructure development and financial support, the budget aims to enhance productivity, ensure farmers’ welfare, and boost employment in Kerala’s traditional industries.

Key Allocations for Agriculture

  1. Rs 227.4 crore has been allocated for agricultural infrastructure development, improving irrigation, storage, and market access for farmers.
  2. Rs 150 crore has been earmarked for paddy development, supporting Kerala’s rice production and ensuring sustainable farming practices.
  3. Rs 78.45 crore has been assigned to the Comprehensive Vegetable Development Scheme, promoting self-sufficiency in vegetable production.
  4. Rs 120 crore has been dedicated to dairy development, supporting milk producers, cooperative societies, and the expansion of dairy farming in the state.

Support for Fishermen and Coastal Protection

The government has also introduced several schemes for fishermen’s welfare, focusing on insurance, safety, and infrastructure:

  1. Rs 295 crore has been set aside for the fishing sector, ensuring better working conditions and livelihood support.
  2. Rs 10 crore has been allocated for a group insurance scheme for fishermen, offering financial security in case of accidents or unforeseen challenges.
  3. Another Rs 10 crore has been designated for coastal protection, addressing the impact of climate change and erosion on Kerala’s coastline.

Support for Traditional and Rural Industries

The budget also provides funding for Kerala’s traditional industries, which play a crucial role in employment and rural development:

  1. Rs 107.6 crore has been allocated for the coir industry, a major livelihood source for many rural workers.
  2. Rs 14.8 crore has been set aside for khadi industry development, promoting small-scale textile production.
  3. Rs 212 crore has been allocated for rural small-scale projects, encouraging entrepreneurship and boosting local businesses.

With significant financial backing for key sectors, the Pinarayi government aims to strengthen Kerala’s agricultural backbone, support the fishing community, and revive traditional industries, ensuring sustainable growth and economic resilience across the state.
