Shailaputri: The Goddess of New Beginnings Worshipped on Day 1 of Navaratri

Honoring the Divine Power of Goddess Shailaputri, the First Form of Nava Durga

The Navaratri festival, celebrated with great devotion and fervor, begins with the worship of Goddess Shailaputri, one of the nine manifestations of the supreme mother goddess, Durga. On the first day of Navaratri, devotees honor Shailaputri, the embodiment of divine strength, purity, and new beginnings. Navaratri spans nine days, with each day dedicated to a different form of Durga: Brahmacharini, Chandrakhanta, Kushmanda, Skandamatha, Kathyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri.

Shailaputri, regarded as Goddess Parvati in Hindu mythology, is the daughter of the mountain king Himavan (Himalayas) and Mena Devi. The name “Shailaputri” literally translates to “daughter of the mountains.” She is also known by other names such as Sathi, Bhavani, Hemavati, and Parvati. In this form, Shailaputri is depicted seated on the bull Nandi, carrying a trident in one hand and a lotus in the other, symbolizing her connection with the divine powers of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.

As the goddess of nature and motherly love, Shailaputri represents the root energy or Mooladhara chakra. Devotees offer jasmine flowers, her favorite, to Devi temples on the first day of Navaratri to seek blessings. Reciting the sacred “Shailaputri Devi Stuti” is considered auspicious, invoking her grace and protection.

The worship of Shailaputri marks the beginning of the spiritual journey during Navaratri, symbolizing the purity of thought and the strength needed to overcome life’s challenges. Her blessings are sought for health, prosperity, and spiritual growth, making her a powerful and revered figure in Hindu traditions.

The chant “Ya Devi Sarva Bhuteshu” in the Shailaputri Devi Stuti praises her divine form and grace, reminding devotees of her ability to protect and bless all beings in the universe. By honoring Shailaputri, the goddess of the mountains, devotees seek new beginnings, strength, and the courage to face challenges with grace and determination.
