Bougainvillea Blossoms in Kerala Gardens: A Spectrum of Vibrant Hues

From Traditional to Trendy, Bougainvillea Adds Year-Round Color to Your Garden

In Kerala’s lush gardens, bougainvillea has established itself as a beloved ornamental plant, bringing a splash of vibrant colors and exotic charm to homes. Known for its radiant, clustered blooms in shades like deep fuchsia and classic white, bougainvillea varieties have now expanded to include light blue, yellow, orange, red, violet, and even lilac. The “Lola” variety, which produces lilac-colored blossoms, is especially captivating and blooms continuously, including during Kerala’s monsoon season.

Bougainvillea’s appeal lies in its versatility. Not only can it be grafted to display multiple colors on the same plant, but it also adapts well as a bonsai or can be trimmed into various shapes. Newer varieties of bougainvillea surpass traditional ones in blooming frequency, producing flowers 6 to 7 times per year, compared to the local types that bloom just 2 to 3 times. Additionally, many modern varieties are thornless and feature slimmer, vine-like stems that can either sprawl gracefully or be pruned into compact shrubs.

This plant thrives in sunlight, requiring 5 to 6 hours of direct exposure daily. Bougainvillea care is relatively simple, with pruning playing an essential role in encouraging abundant flowering. For the best results, prune the plant by late May, just before the monsoon season. Bougainvillea can also be grown in pots, making it accessible for smaller spaces.

The trend of collecting bougainvillea varieties in a range of colors has become popular among gardening enthusiasts, and with good reason. Easy to maintain and resilient, bougainvillea can bring vivid blooms throughout the year. Local varieties start at an affordable Rs 100, while rare and specialty types can cost up to Rs 2000, offering options for every gardener’s budget.
