In terms of materials, Kerala traditionally used hardwoods such as teak, mahogany, and jackfruit, but today, MDF, marine plywood, and multiwood are more commonly used for cabinetry. Additionally, the kitchen layout should focus on the “working triangle” (stove, refrigerator, and sink) with distances not exceeding five feet to ensure smooth workflow. The height of the countertops should ideally be between 85-90 cm for optimal comfort.
Lastly, ferro-cement is becoming a preferred choice for modern shelving and cabinet construction due to its cost-effectiveness and ability to support various finishes.
